Why should we consider MENTAL HEALTH?

According to current updates of the World Health Organization, one in four people in the world will be affected by mental health. Recently almost more than 450 million people in the world are suffering from mild to moderate mental illness, from which 300 million people are affected by depression. This rate of increasing mental illness is the leading cause of ill-health and disability. Most people consider mental illness as a personal failure and they do not go for their treatment. The other reason for not taking treatment is fear of stigmatization and they avoid talking about it. Another barrier towards treatment is lack of awareness and resources. People should know that as our body becomes sick sometimes and we feel uneasy and consult a doctor, the same as our brain can also feel exhaustion which creates disturbances. So in this case we should concern psychologists or psychiatrists. Adults which are the future of any nation, are mainly suffering from mental illness. According to different surveys and researches, mental illness is common in adults having an age range from 15 years to 35 years. People especially youth needs awareness regarding mental health. There should be strategic decisions and choices to bring positive change in the young generation. Awareness programs should be promoted more and more, so people realize that mental health is also as important as their physical fitness. There is a demand for spreading mental health awareness. This is the time to break the stigma, to overcome the shame of having a mental illness, and to reduce misconceptions about mental illness. Instead of thinking “who will bell the cat”, there is a time to step forward and “bell the cat”. Those who are graduated in psychology, they should realize their degree is not a showpiece but this degree is their power, the more you know, the more power you have. So don’t waste this power, instead charge the nation with this power. Our struggle should not for a day, or a week but to spread awareness from persons of all age levels and this struggle must be continued. As our religion also appreciates this, because Allah says: “If anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind.” (5:32).
